17 projects from 11 provinces have been opened for resort development
The government of the Maldives, with a view to further expanding the tourism industry, is seeking bids to develop another 14 islands and 3 lagoons as luxury resorts. The locations and properties that are open for bidding are;
- Vaikaramuraadhu ( 15 hectares), Hdh Atoll
- Kudalhaimendu, Sh Atoll
- Dikkuredhu, R Atoll
- Dhiffushi, Lh. Atoll
- Vihafarufinolhu, Lh Atoll
- Himmiyya falhu (lagoon), Male’ Atoll
- Lagoon, Male’ Atoll
- Alikoirah, Aa Atoll
- Lagoon, V Atoll
- Gaalee, Th. Atoll
- Ruhthibirah, Th Atoll
- Kanimeedhoo, Th
- Kashidhoo, L Atoll
- Hanhushi, L Atoll
- Beyrumaudoo, GA Atoll
- Kalhehutta, GDh Atoll
The present administration aims to expand tourism to different parts of the country, while offering necessary assistance to investors to accelerate the construction of the unfinished resorts.
At present there are 182 operational resorts (44,277 beds) in the Maldives, 15 city hotels (2,016), 855 guesthouses (14,269 beds) and 149 Safari Vessels/Liveaboards 149 (2,916), making a total bed capacity of 63,578.

Several more resorts including some to be managed by internationally renowned brands are also expected to open late this year and in 2025. These include Mandarin Oriental Bolidhuffaru Reef, JW Marriott, Emboodhoo Finolhu, Bulgari Resort Ranfushi and Rosewood Ranfaru Maldives among others.
